Refund Policies

Tuition and Fees Refund Policy:

Students who withdraw from enrollment at The Ocean Corporation, or have their enrollment terminated for administrative, disciplinary, attendance, or other reasons may be entitled to a refund of tuition and other costs paid to the school, as follows:

1.   A student who discontinues for any reason within the first 72 hours of the program will be entitled to a refund of all tuition and fees paid less $100.00.

2.   A student who discontinues after the first 72 hours of the program will be charged the $100 registration fee and may be entitled to a refund of the remaining tuition and fees.  The minimum refund of the remaining tuition and fees will be calculated based on clock hours using the Texas State refund policy, as follows:

Program 01 - Ultimate Diver Training and Program 03 - Nondestructive Testing/Inspection Training:

     (a) Instruction time completed – 1 through 25 clock hours (day 01 through day 05)           = 90% refund
     (b) Instruction time completed – 26 through 75 clock hours (day 06 through day 15)         = 80% refund
     (c) Instruction time completed – 76 through 190 clock hours (day 16 through day 38)       = 75% refund
     (d) Instruction time completed – 191 through 375 clock hours (day 39 through day 75)     = 50% refund
     (e) Instruction time completed – 376 through 565 clock hours (day 76 through day 113)   = 10% refund
     (f ) Instruction time completed – 566 through 750 clock hours (day 114 to graduation)      =   0% refund
(Student is obligated for full tuition)

Refund computations will be based on scheduled clock hours in each day of instruction through the effective date of termination.  A “day of instruction” is defined as a scheduled class day excluding holidays, weekends, or any other day when classes are not in session.

3.   The effective date of the termination for refund purposes will be the earliest of the following:

     (a) The date administrative action is taken by the school to terminate the student’s enrollment (dismissal).
     (b) The date of receipt of written notice of withdrawal from the student (see “Withdrawal Policy, page 29”).
     (c) The date the student is dismissed under the school’s attendance policy.

4.   The student will not be required to purchase instructional tools and supplies until such time as these materials are required.  However, there is no refund on these "issued items" as these become the personal property of the recipient student.

5.   A full refund of all tuition and fees is due and refundable in each of the following cases:

     (a) An applicant for admission is not accepted by the school.
     (b) If the program of instruction is discontinued by the school, preventing the student from completing the training.
     (c) If the student's enrollment was procured as a result of any misrepresentation in advertising, promotional
materials of the school, or representations by the owner or representatives of the school.

6. Refunds will be totally consummated within 21 days after the effective date of termination.

7. In all cases, the refund will meet or exceed the requirements of the Texas Education Code 132.061.

A "Day" is defined as a class day excluding holidays and weekends.

Refund Policy for Students Called to Active Military Service:

A student of The Ocean Corporation who withdraws from training as a result of the student being called to active duty in a military service of the United States or the Texas National Guard may elect one of the following options for each program in which the student is enrolled:

1. If tuition and fees are collected in advance of the withdrawal, a pro rata refund of any tuition, fees, or other charges paid by the student for the program and a cancellation of any unpaid tuition, fees, or other charges owed by the student for the portion of the program the student does not complete following withdrawal;

2. A grade of incomplete with the designation "withdrawn-military" for the courses in the program, other than courses for which the student has previously received a grade on the student's transcript, and the right to re-enroll in the program, or a substantially equivalent program if that program is no longer available, not later than the first anniversary of the date the student is discharged from active military duty without payment of additional tuition, fees, or other charges for the program other than any previously unpaid balance of the original tuition, fees, and charges for books for the program; or

3. The assignment of an appropriate final grade or credit for the courses in the program, but only if the instructor or instructors of the program determine that the student has:

     (a) satisfactorily completed at least 90 percent of the required coursework for the program; and
     (b) demonstrated sufficient mastery of the program material to receive credit for completing the program.

Return of Title IV Funds:

Recipients of Federal Title IV financial aid who withdraw from enrollment at The Ocean Corporation, or have their enrollment terminated for administrative, disciplinary, attendance, or other reasons will have their financial aid eligibility re-calculated under a formula prescribed by the U.S. Department of Education.  In general, a student will keep only the pro-rated portion of student aid “earned” through attendance in the first sixty percent of the enrollment period.  Upon completion of the first sixty percent of the enrollment period, all of a student’s financial aid is considered “earned” and no return of funds is necessary.  The school will calculate the amount of aid earned/retained using the following method:

Step One:
Determine the percentage of the payment period (or period of enrollment) the student attended before withdrawing.

Step Two:
Determine the amount of Title IV aid earned by multiplying the total Title IV aid (other than FWS) for which the student qualified by the percentage of time enrolled.

Step Three:
Compare the amount earned to the amount disbursed. If less aid was disbursed than was earned, the student may receive a late disbursement for the difference. If more aid was disbursed than was earned, determine the amount of Title IV aid that must be returned (i.e., that was unearned) by subtracting the earned amount from the amount actually disbursed.

Step Four:
Allocate the responsibility for returning unearned aid between the school and the student according to the portion of disbursed aid that could have been used to cover institutional charges and the portion that could have been disbursed directly to the student once institutional charges were covered (as defined by federal regulation).

Step Five:
Distribute the unearned aid back to the Title IV programs.

More detailed information on the Return of Title IV Funds may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office.
